A recent study conducted by New Jersey-based EmLab P&K reported over 300,000 bacteria colonies in a typical reusable water bottle, which is more than what a household toilet harbors. The lingering stench on reusable bottles is caused by this remaining bacteria that cannot be cleaned with soap and water.

Klistem combats this problem by using the 253.7nm wavelength, which is found to be most effective in debilitating bacterial DNA to prohibit reproduction. Because UV-C sanitation is only effective upon contact, it is essential that rays completely reach the inside of the bottle. However, with the top-to-bottom design of current sanitation products on the market, UV-C rays are not fully distributed and are blocked by shadows. Klistem's unique design puts the bottle upside-down, which allows gravity to pull the remaining water droplets outside the bottle. With the light and air source being at the bottom, UV-C rays and air flow reaches all the crevices of the bottle. This is the key to Klistem's maximum sanitation.
