Pillars of Eternity creators plan to expand with tabletop RPG, card game

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Pillars of Eternity launched March 26 to a very strong critical reception and its maker, Obsidian Entertainment, is not standing pat. A physical card game and a tabletop roleplaying game are both in the works, Obsidian's CEO told PC Gamer.

Feargus Urquhart said the card game will come first, and should soon be announced as a Kickstarter project, to be made by another development group. Urquhart said Chris Taylor, the lead designer of the original Fallout, will be involved in its creation.

"This isn't like a [collectible card game] or anything like that," Urquhart told PC Gamer, "but it's more just a fun, kind of, four people get around and play a single session card game."

Back in February, Urquhart said a Pathfinder card game was coming to tablets sometime in the next few months, and mentioned that Pillars of Eternity was a possible theme for a similar card game following it.

Obsidian has also promised expansions for Pillars of Eternity as part of its Kickstarter campaign, and in February, Urquhart said the studio would begin serious discussions of building a sequel.

The tabletop role-playing game seems to still be in a conceptual stage but Urquhart sounded certain that it was a product they're "absolutely" looking into. "We're not sure yet how we're going to do it," he told PC Gamer. "We were kind of going back and forth on, do we use the game's rules, do we use someone else's rules, do we come up with another set of rules?"
