Spiderman 2 Creator Jamie Fristrom Lets us Swing Again with Energy Hook

June 5th - via: fundthisgame.com
If anyone needed proof that $1 goals were a successful idea, look no further than Jamie Fristorm’s kickstarter project, Energy Hook. “I kept making one excuse after another to not launch the kickstarter. ‘Shouldn’t launch over the holidays.’ ‘This isn’t good enough.’ ‘I should probably get it playable first.’ So when I finally set up the campaign, the advice on both the Kickstarter page and around the web was to make the funding target as small as possible. And I thought at this point I’ve come so far and love the game so much that I don’t need any money to finish it. So I thought ‘The answer is one dollar.’ So then why do a Kickstarter at all – why not just make that minimally viable game and sell it the old-fashioned way? Because I still wanted all the benefits that Kickstarter can provide: the stretch goals funding, the exposure, and the community”. (Read More)

'Energy Hook' Kickstarter Campaign Enters Final Week

June 4th - via: worthplaying.com
You play as Delilah, one-time Energy Hook great who has been out of the competition for years--raising her daughter--and now needs to get back in to pay for her daughter's medical bills. Maybe not as daunting as it sounds, with the anti-aging medical technology of The Future, but still, she'll have to learn the ropes all over again, as she competes to earn her way back up to the top of the Energy Hook league. An old friend, crippled in an Energy Hook accident, will help her through these tough channels and the changes that have happened in the sport since her heyday. (Read More)

Why the man behind Spider-Man 2's swinging launched a one dollar Kickstarter

May 27th - via: polygon.com
Fristrom is no longer at Treyarch. He left after Spider-Man 2 to go indie at his development studio Happion Laboratories. Last year, he decided to return to his webbed roots with a game called Energy Hook, which is built upon the mechanic — a blend of freeform movement and AI-assisted "swing points" to choose from — that made him famous. The game is set in a future where athletes use the titular device to swing around a city. He launched the campaign a few weeks ago months later than he expected and with a $1 funding goal. (Read More)

Kickstarter Fu

May 22nd - via: gamasutra.com
The Energy Hook Kickstarter may not be up there with Brian Fargo's stuff but for what's pratically a one-person shop it's doing quite famously. So people are asking me if I had any secret sauce. Strategically, I think the Spider-Man 2 nostalgia has been really helpful, and the $1 thing was unique and a lot of press were interested in that, so those two things combined drove a lot of backers. (Read More)

Spider-Man 2 Developer Launches $1 Kickstarter Project

May 10th - via: escapistmagazine.com
You may recall that Zero Punctuation ringmaster Yahtzee Croshaw was actually pretty enthusiastic about the web-swinging element in the old Spider-Man 2 movie tie-in - possibly because Jamie Fristrom, the designer and technical director on the game, makes a point of bringing it up (complete with link) in the second paragraph of the Kickstarter for his new project, Energy Hook. It's relevant because Energy Hook is basically an expansion of that mechanic, "a swinging game where style is just as important as speed, where mixing up wall-runs and loops and big air with your swings is more important than just getting from point A to point B." (Read More)
