The video shows an interview with Nicolas Cage, who was to star in the unmade Tim Burton movie.

The documentary was funded through Kickstarter earlier in the year, with its campaign raising $115,110 (£74,300).

Jon Schnepp's documentary also features interviews with high-profile Superman writers including Mark Waid and Grant Morrison, both of whom can be seen briefly in the trailer.

"Tim and I were pretty far down the road designing it and I know with Tim and where I was going to go that we would have done something special," said Cage in the trailer. "But at least it's out there in the ether that it could have happened."

Based loosely on the 'Death and Return of Superman' story, Superman Lives was put into development in the '90s before the project was abandoned by Warner Bros.

The Death of 'Superman Lives': What Happened? is scheduled for release in December.
