One company is hoping to address the non-sustainable nature of tampons and have announced plans for a tampon applicator that you can reuse, The Guardian reports

The company, called Dame, shared the news of its product D on its official Kickstarter, explaining that the tampon applicator is made of reusable technology that enables one to wash and use the product again.

D looks much like your typical disposable tampon applicator, and is created with a smooth plastic material. It also comes with a lock that will keep tampon strings out of the way during usage. The applicator is said to fit users of all sizes and was created with heat-resistant material that allows you to safely sterilize after using it.

In a previous interview with Fast Company, Dame Cofounder Celia Pool explained they wanted to change the way others thought of tampons. "One of the goals was to make something that looked beautiful, that looked well designed," she said. "We didn’t want to go down the pink and fluffy route." She went on to explain that they wanted to create products "in a more sustainable way without compromising on their beauty, their design, and their efficacy."

It's estimated that a person will use more than 11,000 tampons in their lifetime, The Guardian reported. Many period products that wind up in the trash reportedly take years to break down, and as Dame notes, there's an even bigger problem with plastic in general. According to their Kickstarter, 8 million pieces of plastic enter the oceans every day, resulting in the fact that a third of the fish that we eat already contain plastic. The creators of D hope to address that with their product, saying in a statement on their Kickstarter that they're "on a mission to to reduce waste from everyday products, without compromising on performance or beauty. Period products are just the start."

D is not yet available in stores, but their Kickstarter reports that they hope to have it some in retail shops by 2019. In the meantime, those who back D on Kickstarter will receive the product with their pledge.
