Fundraiser now open for installation of LGBTQ pride crosswalk near downtown

SAN ANTONIO — A Kickstarter fundraiser is now open for those who would like to donate to the permanent installation of a LGBTQ pride crosswalk near downtown.

The crosswalk will be installed at the intersection of N. Main Street and Evergreen Street -- the heart of San Antonio’s LGBT community. The proposal on the Kickstarter page states that the addition of the crosswalk will "affirm San Antonio is a place of acceptance and equality."

Councilman Roberto Treviño of District 1 is behind the proposal.

In August, the city’s governance committee unanimously approved the crosswalk.

“We have the opportunity to highlight San Antonio as a compassionate and inclusive city while addressing basic infrastructure needs,” Treviño said. “There is significant support from the both the community, local organizations and businesses, and over the next few months we will really see the broad financial support for this initiative materialize.”

According to the Kickstarter:

"This Crosswalk will be a joint funded venture between the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Community. Once the Crosswalk is installed we will need to help maintain it and keep it in good working condition. Your pledge is a donation to the cause."
