Tactical Simulations Interactive (a team comprised of several former members of Strategic Simulations Interactive, who produced a bunch of D&D adaptations back in the 90’s) has announced a release schedule for its new RPG Seven Dragons Saga. The game will launch in 2016.
Based upon an original pen and paper RPG system designed by former SSI devs Keith Brors and David Shelley, Seven Dragons Saga has just hit Kickstarter. The game’s partially funded already, so this is an effort to gather enough cash to finish production completely.
”We’re now going through a process of upgrading and improving many of the early systems,” reads the Kickstarter page. “We’ll use the funding for much needed programming, art, music and sound. This will see us through to a polished and expansive product that our audience will expect and enjoy. Backing Seven Dragon Saga will make you our collaborators, rather than needing a publisher or other resource.”
There’s a bit more information about Seven Dragons Saga on the campaign page too. It’s a party-based game where you create your own six person team of heroes, each of whom is given a ‘Goal’ during character creation. As you explore the world and encounter quest decisions, you’ll have to balance the outcome of the mission with the desires of your team - if the decisions you make matches up with a character’s stated goal, they’ll get bonus experience. Managing your team’s goals and trying to satisfy everyone will be a tricky challenge.
There’s also a region-conquering ‘Borderlands’ system, that allows you to build new structures and utilities once you clear an area of enemy troops. You can find out more on the campaign page.
Seven Dragons Saga has raised $25,000 from a $450,000 goal, with 32 days left to go. In all honesty it’s not one of the most attractive and enticing Kickstarter campaigns I’ve ever seen, but the team has pedigree. Should the game be funded, it will be interesting to see how the guys behind classic early CRPGs take on a modern project.
