A crowdfunding campaign to revive the satirical 1990s Sega Genesis title Mutant League Football launched today on Kickstarter.

Now dubbed Mutant Football League, the hybrid sports-action game will feature 30 teams of fully customizable characters that give new meaning to the term “big uglies.” It will also have an assortment of lethal weapons, trap-filled stadiums, and a Family Guy-inspired sense of humor.

Having just celebrated the original Mutant title’s 20th anniversary, designer Michael Mendheim recently told GamesBeat that the timing just feels right for a reboot. “I’ve received a ton of notes from gamers over the years, as well as seen the various ‘games that need to be remade’ articles calling for this type of game to be made,” he said.

Mendheim chose Kickstarter because he said it will allow his team to have full creative control over the storyline, characters, and environments.

“A major publisher wouldn’t allow us to poke fun at the things we want to make fun of,” he said. “Let’s face it, Mutant Football League is going to be the opposite of what’s politically correct. It will go against the grain of all decent-minded American folk and be proud of it. We are going to have fun with all of it.”

Mutant Football League’s story is getting some help from an impressive list of writers, including comic book scribe Dave Elliott, SpongeBob Squarepants’ Jay Lender, and Call of Duty: Black Ops: Zombies’ Micah Wright. They plan to parody anything and everyone in professional sports and pop culture, Mendheim said, including golfer Tiger Woods, cyclist Lance Armstrong, Manti Te’o and his fake girlfriend, Alex Rodriguez and the Biogenesis scandal, and NFL star Tim Tebow.

Mendheim is asking for $750,000. If the Kickstarter campaign crosses the goal line, he said the money will secure talent to develop the game.

Mutant Football League has a tentative release date of Summer 2015. It will be available on Xbox Live and mobile platforms.
