Spike Lee Crosses $500K, Carries Celebrity Crowdfunding Torch

spike leeSpike Lee has a high-profile Kickstarter campaign for his new film and the campaign has just crossed $500,000 of funding with a little over two weeks to go.

As is often the case with celebrities on Kickstarter, Lee has carried the torch for crowdfunding and the celebrities that use it. Perhaps most of note is his recent testy appearance on CNBC where he sparred with CNBC pundit Simon Hobbs on the subject of his net worth.

He isn’t the first crowdfunder on Kickstarter to receive this treatment. Rob Thomas was subject to the same type of questioning during the campaign for Veronica Mars, and the same could be said for Zach Braff. Braff may have received the most criticism simply due to his past role on hit TV show Scrubs.

The examination of personal wealth during crowdfunding campaigns is becoming the dead horse in the space, and pundits that take this angle of argument are going to look increasingly tacky and uninformed over time. The discussion has been had and at this point I think it has been established: anyone can crowdfund for anything, and the crowd is the only true judge.

Lee is going to have to do some work to hit his $1.25 million goal in the next couple of weeks. He’s trending almost dead-on his goal.
