Ex-Cop Announces Police Adventure Game

by Brian Albert on Jul 16, 2013 at 01:43 PM

Jim Walls, an ex-Sierra developer who spent 15 years as a police officer, wants you to see what it’s like to serve on the force.

He and his development team at Jim Walls Reloaded have announced a Kickstarter campaign for Precinct, an adventure game inspired by real police activities. Unlike Police Quest, which Walls developed at Sierra On-Line in 1987, Precinct will feature real-time gameplay, 3D visuals, and a first-person perspective.

Walls is asking for $500,000 via Kickstarter to create one Precinct game, including its engine. The company plans to later release additional Precinct titles using that same technology and funds from the sales of the first game.

If the goal is reached, we can expect car chases, shootouts, investigations, arrests, and more when Precinct releases on PC and Mac in 2014. If additional money is earned, the game may release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well. For more on Kickstarter, check out our recently updated Compendium.

Our Take
For $500,000, a first-person action game with 3D visuals is a very tall order. If the developers can pull off their vision on such a restrictive budget, we should be in for a treat. An engine and a game for half a million dollars though, is a big challenge.

The Police Quest games are well liked, and they blended Walls' real-world police experience with Sierra's adventure game pedigree. Bringing that back with contemporary sensibilities would definitely be something fresh.
