The visually striking hand-drawn artwork of the upcoming RPG Liege caught our eye back in April, and now the developer - Coda Games - has released a wealth of new details on what we can expect from the game.

The "mature narrative" of Liege focuses on ordinary people who are thrust into fantastic, larger-then-life circumstances where "family, power, love, death, and other way serious, totally heavy things" are all on offer.

The other "way serious, totally heavy things" kick off when the King of Liege and his family fall into a deep slumber and don't wake up. The ensuing power struggle quickly turns into a bloody civil war between the noble houses of the land.

Think Final Fantasy Tactics meets Game of Thrones and you won't be far off on what you can expect form Liege.

Coda's John Rhee promises that the tactical, turn-based battles in Liege will "emerge seamlessly" as you wander about the map.

This means, for better or worse, that there won't be any jarring transitions between field screens and battle screens.

Like Fire Emblem and chess, success in battle is determined by the strategic placement and movement of units. Also like chess, Rhee plans to have units always be vulnerable to a single, direct strike - so there's no hope of grinding XP until your party members are nearly invincibile.

On top of all of this, Rhee plans to give Liege a full, orchestral soundtrack with a focus on lush, organic sound to compliment the game's rich visuals.

To help fund its soundtrack and overall development, Rhee recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for Liege - which is currently scheduled to be the first game in a new fantasy trilogy.

At time of writing, Liege's Kickstarter has amassed $4,000 of its $15,000 funding goal with 30 days left in its campaign.

Liege is expected on iOS and Android at the beginning of 2014.
