Oh glorious day! A Hat in Time, a wonderfully cute collect-a-thon platformer, has not only met its quaint $30,000 Kickstarter goal, but destroyed it. Current funding sits at $230,000 and the project still has 52 hours left before it ends. That means that not only do the devs get to finish the game like they wanted, but they're adding two extra chapters, co-op, new game+, tons of voice acting, and at least three songs from Banjoe-Kazooie composer Grant Kirkhope. Glorious!
Why so popular all of a sudden? Well, it helps that the game is pretty far along in development already. It allowed them to provide a working prototype to popular internet shows and streams like the FarFromSubtle Youtube show and Cosmo Wright's speed-running livestream. Said internet shows squee over how amazing the pure and focused nostalgia of the game and boom, instant internet popularity.
Don't get me wrong, A Hat in Time deserves all the attention it gets. When a developer says hey, lots of people love Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie we should make one of those games since no one else will, you give them your money. Seriously, how hard do you have to slap a big publisher to maybe drop a shooter in their line-up and support one of the most popular genres of games in the history of game development? Even Insomniac, makers of Spyro and Ratchet & Clank hasn't made a proper one since 2009. What is wrong with this planet?
By the by, check out A Hat in Time and be delighted. It's currently planned for release on PC and also maybe/okay/no promises Wii U. Kickstarter goal get!
Oh god. I wish I had a steam account now. I need this gaaame. Oh and I like that a female is the main protagonist instead of a fat plumber or a funky ape
