American McGee is back at it, only it seems publishers aren't willing to bank on his games being, well, profitable anymore. Instead McGee is taking his next game, OZombie, to Kickstarter. After all, it worked for his last game, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters! Unlike Akaneiro, however, OZombie will be a return to the dark and twisted single-player experiences McGee is known for.
What a coincidence, the campaign begins today. American McGee and his Spicy Horse studio are asking for $950,000 to fund the project and they've given 41 more days to accomplish this. I won't lie, even with American McGee's name a million dollars in 40 days is going to be hard to accomplish.
Enough about numbers, let's talk what the heck is up with OZombie. When you hear the premise it'll all fall into place pretty quickly. Zombies want brains, the Scarecrow wants a brain -- OZombie. Yes, the Scarecrow is the villain and he has a mindless brain hungry army which will require you, as Dorothy, to team up with the Tin Woodsman and the Lion to defeat. It's McGee's insanity mixed with the Oz everyone knows from childhood.
Check out American McGee's Kickstarter pitch video for OZombie below. It's certainly, erm, unique. Then feel free to check out the OZombie Kickstarter page for more information and additional details on the project. In addition, one of the stretch goals for the project, should it acquire 6,000 backers, is the opening of "The Box" which may or may not contain secrets about the future of the Alice franchise. Oh, American McGee, such a tease.
