What would Shoshanna say? Girls star Zosia Mamet and sister Clara fail to impress fans with Kickstarter campaign

There are no “emojis” to describe Girls star Zosia Mamet and her sister Clara’s (as yet) failed attempt to raise $32,000 from fans to help launch their music careers.

Zosia, who stars as the innocent Shoshanna in Lena Dunham’s hit TV show Girls, and her fellow actress sister Clara, have so far raised just $2,005 of their $32,000 target since they signed up to the crowdfunding website Kickstarter on Sunday. They have nine days left to get the money and it’s not looking good.

It is questionable why the daughters of playwright David Mamet, who both have successful careers in television, are appealing to the public to raise tens of thousands of dollars to make a music video. They describe their music as a “unique brand of folk via body percussion, banjo and harmonies”.

In a video introducing their new single “Bleak Love”, Zosia explains that the two formed their band “as an excuse to spend more time together”. Their sometimes baffling commentary continues in a similarly self-reflexive way.

“I took up the banjo and started playing it very badly but we thought it was reason enough to continue,” says Clara. “The song just kind of happened, we wrote it in like a matter of hours, so to do an actual music video to the song would be like a full circle thing.”

The sisters describe their vision for the video as “bouncing from opulence to sparseness, French Baroque to a simple, timeless and heartbroken…that includes beautiful gowns, statues, a large opulent loft space, extensive make-up, saturated tones.”

And if that wasn’t enough self-indulgence to make Shoshanna shriek “OMG!”, the pair made the unfortunate error of misspelling “privilege” - but have since corrected the error.

The sisters are just the latest in a line of celebrities who have crowdfunded projects (or tried to) by appealing to their fanbase. But it seems you need more than a whim and the opportunity to win a chair with Shoshanna embroidered on the back for it to work.

Recent success stories include Scrubs star Zach Braff who successfully raised over $3 million for the follow-up to his film Garden State last month. Easy Rider actress Karen Black even used a website, GoFundMe, to raise money for her cancer treatment, receiving over $60,000 in two months from people anxious to see her receive the best care.
