Kobold Press’ take on the 5th Edition D&D ruleset, Tales of the Valiant formerly known as Black Flag hit Kickstarter with a bang.

With more than a half million dollars raised at press time, Kobold Press’ Tales of the Valiant, a reimagining of the 5th Edition D&D ruleset formerly known as Black Flag has launched on Kickstarter to massive success. Tales from the Valiant promises “all the best of 5E D&D.”

As of the last playtest, some had questions about what “the best” of 5E D&D was, exactly. But the game’s success speaks to Kobold’s ability to assuage any doubts. And Tales of the Valiant looks ready to crash into the 5E space with a community of almost 5K backers (and that’s just at press time, with a month left to go).

Tales of the Valiant Launches on Kickstarter

What is Tales of the Valiant? It’s Kobold Press looking to keep the 5th Edition community independent, with tabletop moving forward. ToV wants to keep all the best of 5E D&D and add the Kobold Press spin to the well-loved game, combining the Creative Commons foundation of 5th Edition with new elements to create a “Kobold-style” 5E.

What does that mean, exactly? Here’s a look at what’s inside:

New 5E Options. Of course, ToV includes the fighter, wizard, and rogue, and dwarves and elves. Much more than that, it provides a wealth of new options and expanded gameplay. Explore the new Mechanist class and try out the kobold, outsider, and beastkin character lineages. Tales of the Valiant provides hundreds of new options for talents, spells, and monsters.

Create Your Own World and Share Your Adventures. Tales of the Valiant is built on the Creative Commons and Open Roleplaying Content licenses, so the core rules are available for everyone to expand on as part of the 5E global community. Keep your investment in 5th Edition going strong!

In the Tales of the Valiant Kickstarter there are two books: the Player’s Guide and Monster Vault. In the Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide, you’ll find 13 base classes, which should look familiar:

You’ll also find lineages and heritages, so you can be an Elf, Dwarf, Kobold, Halfling, etc.

While the Monster Vault will have hundreds of “core fantasy” monsters. This mostly means Kobold’s version of monsters that appear in the 5E Monster Manual, plus a few new monsters like “star crows, husk demons, and mechadragons.”
