Access to Malibu beaches has long been a controversial issue, but a cell phone application is hoping to make it easier for visitors to enjoy the city's 27 miles of coastline.

The app called "Our Malibu Beaches" is currently trying to raise money on Kickstarter, which is crowd-sourced fundraising platform, to create a free version for Android phones.

LA-based environmental journalist Jenny Price is the brains behind the app, making her knowledge of Malibu available to all.

"There's no such thing as an all private beach in California, a lot of people don't know that," Price said in a video on Kickstarter. "Malibu is in California, so that means there's 20 miles of these really gorgeous public beaches that are lined with private development and every single one of those beaches there's an awful lot of sand that you, I, we can all use."

The app promises to show users exactly where each public beach access point is. It promises to help users park and will even help find the best spot on the dry sand walking down the beaches house-by-house.

The app even addresses how to tell what signage is real, and what can be purchased at hardware stores.

If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, the "Our Malibu Beaches" app will be free for everyone to download all summer long. As of Monday night, the app had raised more than $5,000 of the $30,000 needed.
