The Arduboy Mini is a compact gaming handheld for hobbyists looking to get their teeth stuck into a new project. Offered with a small OLED display and several gamepad buttons, the Arduboy Mini can access over 300 games and is available to back on Kickstarter for US$29.

It has been over three years since the Arduboy Mini was announced, four years after the original Arduboy debuted. Now, the former has made its way to Kickstarter, where it has already reached its funding target. Currently, the crowdfunding campaign is scheduled to end on January 4 2023, but it will take a minimum of five months for the first Arduboy Mini units to start shipping globally.

As its name suggests, the Arduboy Mini runs Arduino, ensuring compatibility with all software developed for the Arduboy. As such, the former supports over 300 games, which are only playable on the device’s 0.96-inch OLED display. For reference, a 16 MHz Atmega32u4 processor powers the 128 x 64-pixel display, with 16 MB of flash storage holding the Arduboy Mini’s game library.

It is worth stressing that the 8-bit gaming handheld will not ship with a battery or a case. Hence, you must be confident with some tinkering to get the Arduboy Mini running. The device’s USB Type-C port and associated circuitry can recharge a battery though, while numerous tutorials already exist to get you up to speed. Currently, the Arduboy Mini is backable for US$29 in ‘Standard’ and ‘Graffiti Edition’ colourways. Potentially other colours could be available too, but only if the crowdfunding campaign reaches its US$30,000 stretch goal. Please see the Arduboy Mini Kickstarter page for more information about the device and its capabilities.
