Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo looking for life on Kickstarter

Reliving the same day over and over may not be hell, but it sure is close in Galla's Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo, an upcoming afterlife adventure that is currently seeking crowdfunding on Kickstarter.

Limbo is "a place cursed by time," where souls filled with remorse go to eternally "repeat the same day until they solve their unfinished business." Players control the titular "dead snake with a heart of gold," who awakens in Limbo remembering only the words of a "strange old lady." As you attempt to find and fulfill your own purpose in this place, you'll also have the chance to assist other trapped souls by creating "powerful emotions to help them break the loop and move on." To do so you'll need to "use your wits and keen eye to gather clues from the residents and find items that will help you to breach the obstacles in your path one by one." But beware, as there are also "dark spirits" that reside here that will "try to put out your light."

Kulebra has been heavily inspired by the time-looping quest elements of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and the pop-up papercraft aesthetic of Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. Despite its serious-sounding subject matter, it is meant to be a heartwarming game "about empathy, connection, and love." Its colourfully cartoony 3D backgrounds will evolve as you progress, as Limbo's locations will "be shaped by the problems that surround its residents" at any given time. You'll meet a wide variety of characters in your travels, each with "their own quirks, side stories, and schedules that bring life to this world despite most of them being very dead." Smartly managing time plays a crucial role in your success, as "an in-game day, dusk, and night cycle ... will change the world and characters, ending with the curse that resets the souls of Limbo back to the start." Fortunately, a notebook will help you keep track of any important details you learn along the way.

In order to complete production on Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo, the indie developer has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $60,000 US by November 18th. If successful, we can expect to see the full game launched for PC and Switch by the end of 2024, with PlayStation and Xbox platforms also possible if stretch goals are met. If that seems like a long way off, the good news is that there's a substantial demo available now for Windows, Mac and Linux on Steam and itch.io, providing up to three hours of gameplay.
