It wasn't too long ago that all smartphones came with physical keyboards. It feels like a million years ago, but BlackBerry peaked in September 2013, and there were 85 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide during that time.

Now, a company called Unihertz is aiming to reinvent that style with the Titan Pocket. We reviewed the original Unihertz Titan, and while we didn't love it, we can see where there's a market for a smartphone with buttons.

Unihertz is back on Kickstarter with a new version of the Titan called the Titan Pocket. It builds upon the original foundation, but it makes the device much smaller and easier to carry around.

What Does The Unihertz Titan Pocket Offer?

Obviously, the main selling point of the device is the keyboard. It's a full QWERTY keyboard that offers that tactile feel that a touchscreen can't.

But it takes more than just a keyboard to make a phone, and the Unihertz Titan Pocket has decent enough specs for an entry-level smartphone. It comes with a MediaTek P70 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, which isn't high-performance by any means, but it should get the job done for basic smartphone functions.

Because the keyboard occupies a large part of the phone, the screen is only a 3.1-inch LCD. Additionally, the screen is small because the phone's phone's overall size has been reduced by 31 percent over the original Titan. The small screen comes with a 716x720 resolution for a 328 PPI pixel density.

The Titan Pocket comes with a hefty 4,000mAh battery. As the phone comes with a modest processor and a small screen, that battery should last an absurd length of time. Unihertz didn't get specific, only saying that it'll last days on a single charge.

The phone runs Android 11, which is a great OS in most cases. However, it's designed to work with verticle rectangular screens, so many applications aren't going to play nice with a square screen.

As you might expect from an affordable phone like this one, the camera won't exactly blow you away. It has a 16-megapixel camera that'll take pictures in a pinch, but you're certainly not going to replace your dedicated camera with it.

Unihertz Titan Pocket Price and Availability

Unihertz is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter to bring the Titan Pocket to market. The campaign has vastly exceeded its funding goal, so the device should release.

If you're interested in grabbing a phone, you can preorder a device for KH$1,555 (around $201.) When the device goes on sale, the MSRP will be $299, so you'll save some money if you order now, but then you're shouldering the risk that the device doesn't see the light of day.

While there are always risks backing a crowdfunding campaign, Unihertz has a good track record of delivering on its promises and releasing devices.
