It's hard to say exactly when the pixel art renaissance happened. Perhaps it never quite went away. Nevertheless, it continues with the gorgeous-looking roguelite Astral Ascent, from the makers of the Dark Souls-like Dark Devotion.
Similar to its predecessor, Astral Ascent is presented in a hand-crafted, frame-by-frame pixel art animation style that's something special to see - although it looks much better in motion than it does in screenshots. Also like Dark Devotion, Astral Ascent focuses on boss fights, with 12 powerful enemies to find and destroy, each with their own style of combat.
The Kickstarter for Astral Ascent will go live on the 29th March, and is already aiming for a Switch launch - it's nice to not be a stretch goal! Dark Devotion met its goal back in 2017, with €31,796 (£27,400) raised across 1,563 backers. Check out the trailer above to see if it's your kind of game.
So, what do you think? Up for another pixel adventure? Drop your thoughts on Astral Ascent in the comments.

I'm glad to see this. Played Dark Devotion years ago and really liked this developer. Hoping for their success.
I was thinking just yesterday, at this point Switch shouldn't ever be a stretch goal anymore, but a priority next to Steam. This handheld is the indie machine the Vita could have been.
@StefanN Right? You hear it all the time from indie devs that their sales rise tremendously when they bring their games to the Switch. It's beyond me that there are still indie devs who are hesitant to develop their games with the Switch in mind on release
I read astral chain and was like wooooo
You guys ever going to review Dark Devotion?
Now THIS is how you make pixel games, everything looks SO SMOOTH
I got a huge Children of Morta vibe watching the trailer.
My kickstarter budget is completely empty at this point, but the game still looks nice!
I was about to comment on how these types of pixel games (ala Hyper Light Drifter, Elliot Quest, etc) are not pleasing to me (even though I really liked Elliot Quest).
BUT... BUT... I watched this trailer and wow it actually does look good. It just looks like a lot of work went into the..... sprites? I'm still not a huge fan of the style (I prefer the proper 8-bit/16-bit style) but it honestly looks good and I'll keep my eyes on it. Thanks for sharing!
That looks really good 👀
