What was the most impressive thing you did when you were 12? We’re guessing it wasn’t designing your own card games that are so legit, they’d make great Christmas gifts.

That’s exactly what a group of 12-year-old kids in Singapore have done. They've designed First Class, a boxset of four different card games, and are now seeking $12,000 in funding via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to so that it can go into production and be delivered in time for Christmas.

First Class is a project by non-profit community arts group, Superhero Me, which works with children from various backgrounds to empower them through arts programmes. The nine children who designed the boxset of card games are part of the Lengkok Bahru rental flat community who joined Superhero Me’s inaugural class six years ago.

To celebrate their 'graduation' from the programme, they reunited to design card games, which took about a year and involved a series of workshops, exercises and even photo walks, guided by Superhero Me facilitators.

1 of 2 What’s in a First Class boxset?

There are four card games in the First Class boxset — Market Blitz, Unleashed, House of Cats and Swank Tank.

You'll find that the games in First Class have a unique local twist. That's because they're inspired by the kids’ hobbies, community and their lives. So, no, they’re not your run-of-the-mill Snap or Old Maid card games, okay?

In Market Blitz, the aim of the game is to build the biggest business empire in the neighbourhood.
Outwit your opponents in Unleashed, an intriguing game of mystery that’ll test your skills of persuasion as well.
Flex your memory skills in House of Cats as you try to find missing felines.
Finally, you'll have to work together to assemble fish tanks without scum in Swank Tank.

Each game challenges you in different ways, but one thing’s the same: the hours fly by when you’re playing them. Yup, we’re speaking from firsthand experience.

2 of 2 How do you get your paws on the games?

First Class will go into production when the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter is fully funded by Dec 12 — that is, they reach their goal of $12,000 in funding. Shell out $25 or more and get one game, while a contribution of $80 or more will get you the full boxset of four games. Delivery is estimated to happen in December— perfect for Christmas gifting.

Wanna try playing first?

From Dec 4 to 14, there are limited games night sessions for adults (tix from $25) and game design workshops for kids (tix from $40). These sessions are held in conjunction with Homerun (pictured below), Superhero Me’s community arts exhibition featuring the children’s works in two rental flat units in Lengkok Bahru that have been converted into an uber cool, Instagrammable space. While Homerun tickets are sold out, you’ll be able to get an abridged tour of the exhibition with every ticket purchase for First Class.

First Class: Game Design Workshops & Play Sessions is on from Dec 4 to 14 at 55 Lengkok Bahru. Tix from $25; available at https://shmfirstclass.peatix.com/.
