Zweihander RPG Returns To Fan The Flames Of Freedom

This article is more than 3 years old.

Every nation has its mythology. Most Americans know a few bits and pieces, such as the midnight ride of Paul Revere or George Washington’s honesty involving cherry trees. Playing with mythology is one of the most fun parts of games like Dungeons & Dragons. Players love to face down monsters like the hydra, wander a Weird West looking for zombie cowboys or even discover what famous figures have been turned into vampires. The designers of Zweihander have a new game currently on Kickstarter that explores the mythology of one of the strangest places on Earth; the United States of America.

Flames of Freedom is an upcoming RPG set during the American Revolution. Not only are tensions high between the rebels who want to break away from England and the loyalists who want to stay under the king’s protection, but there are creatures in the darkness that hunger for flesh and souls. Add in conspiratorial intrigue from secretive factions like the Freemasons and the Knights Templar and Flames of Freedom looks to be a fantastic alternate history adventure for fans of films like Sleepy Hollow and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

The game uses a variation of the Zweihander RPG which was built to model a darker kind of fantasy. The rules offer a percentile-based game that’s geared for grim and perilous role-playing. This is a world where injuries take weeks to heal and can linger on after the bandages come off. It also features a random character generation method that encourages players to step out of their comfort zones by assigning the majority of their traits at random. Some careers are built for action and adventure, like the Fur Trapper or Solider. Others, like the Folk Healer or Diplomat, may want to look for cover when battle breaks out. They’ll have a change to contribute to the stories when the talking begins. The game also promises several different types of magic for the players to use against their supernatural foes.

While Zweihander allowed for some of the classic fantasy ancestries in its game, Flames of Freedom digs into the cultures that made America what it is today. These choices include Black and Native American heroes while also highlighting the difference between Americans wanted freedom and those who fought such a radical change. The development team includes several diverse creators to make sure these perspectives are included in the game and they hope that players will learn a little something from these voices in between hunting ancient undead evil and matching wits with sinister agents of secret societies.

The curious who want to check out the RPG right now can download the Preamble for free. It includes a light version of the rules, pre-generated characters and a short adventure that can be played tonight. Backing the Kickstarter gives fans a chance to unlock a variety of add-ons such as Campaign Coins, dice and upgraded maps.

The Kickstarter is due to end on November 4th, 2020. The books are planned to be released on July 4th (of course), 2021.
