Nearly 30 years after the original Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the NES, the now-cult classic has made a strong impression on genre fans with fun gameplay and minimal plot. Such a strong impression, in fact, that fans are getting ready to rally around a kickstarter for a spiritual successor, spearheaded by HumaNature Studios and Tuned-Out Games. The game, aptly titled Demons Ate My Neighbors, is set to deliver on a new retro-styled universe for some classic, campy horror movie fun.

Tuned-Out Games has released the official trailer for the project today on their YouTube channel, and so far? It's looking good. How many other games can boast great pixel graphics, music straight out of an 80s direct-to-DVD horror flick, and a boss fight with a possessed cheerleader? Demons Ate My Neighbors lets players blast their way through the suburbs with waterguns full of holy water in hopes of saving their possessed neighbors.

It's not just an overall fantastic concept, it's also being backed up with a talented production team. Since Zombies Ate My Neighbors failed to produce a sequel that impressed, it's no surprise the concept would eventually rear its head again in a fun (and legally distinct!) way. What we can especially look forward to is a good, sturdy two player co-op game in an age where they're becoming scarcer and scarcer in favor of larger teams or single-player epics.

The Kickstarter for the project, which hopes to raise funds for additional features and a full next-gen console release in 2021, is set to launch on September 1st. Some of the features they're hoping to implement via the Kickstarter donations are standard - more monsters, more levels, more characters, and all the bells and whistles those entail. A few of the other goals are a little more noteworthy: online co-op would certainly be a blessing for players who can't exactly invite their friends over to play it together locally in the current day.

Any fans of Demons Ate My Neighbors' camp-horror aesthetic would do well to keep an eye on the ambitious project as stretch goals are reached and more news comes out. For now, we'll just sit back and enjoy the infectious fun of the trailer.
