Fans of the difficult, Lovecraftian inspired Darkest Dungeon were delighted to hear the news last week of Red Hook Studios and Mythic Games partnership to deliver a board game adaptation. Now it seems like players are getting their first look at the board game at Gen-Con 2020.

Darkest Dungeon released back in 2016 on PC following an incredibly successful Kickstarter to universal praise. The game combines traditional Roguelite run-based mechanics with new features that players must take into consideration, like the sanity meter. Since its excellent launch, the game has expanded from PC onto other platforms like PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

At Gen-Con 2020, players were thrilled to discover new details about the coming Darkest Dungeon Board Game. While the video game is primarily a single-player experience, this board game version is aimed at up to 4 players working cooperatively. Just like with the video game, players will need to delve into three different dungeons and defeat bosses to enter the Darkest Dungeon.

Players will have a few different character classes to choose from as well including the Crusader, Plague Doctor, Highwayman, and Vestal, and as characters level up, they will gain access to more skills, just like in the original game. To maintain that randomly generated feeling of the video game, the Darkest Dungeon Board Game will have players choose dungeon cards at random to determine the various dungeon designs.

While players will surely be excited to back the board game when its Kickstarter goes live this fall, others are anticipating when the next batch of details will be delivered for Darkest Dungeon 2. The sequel was announced in February of 2019, however, Red Hook Studios has been radio silent on the project ever since. Thankfully, the board game is coming out to satiate the hunger for dungeon-delving madness.

Darkest Dungeon is out now on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
