Where Is My Body? is a new video game being released for, of all things, the Nintendo Game Boy. The game comes from one-person developer Green Boy Games, which is dedicated to developing Game Boy games in an effort to keep the old handheld system alive.

It's not a stretch to say that the Game Boy was a wildly influential console. It played a major role in establishing the handheld video game market and making Nintendo a dominant force in that industry. The Game Boy was so successful that Nintendo kept supporting it even after the release of the Game Boy Color and the Game Boy advance. Portable gaming likely wouldn't be where it is today without the Nintendo Game Boy, and even now, several of its titles withstand the test of time.

Some people aren't prepared to forget that fact. Dan Pusch, a game developer living in Barcelona, is still developing games for the original Game Boy, complete with physical cartridges modeled to look like the ones released by Nintendo during the system's heyday. Pusch's most recent endeavor is on Kickstarter, and is titled Where Is My Body? It's a point and click adventure game styled in homage of classics like Maniac MansionWhere Is My Body? casts the player as a disembodied hand on a quest to find the rest of its body, in a conceit which bears striking similarities to I Lost My Body, a French animated movie from 2019 which was nominated for Best Animated Movie. While the film struck a somber and reflective tone, Where Is My Body? is clearly more interested in establishing the wacky adventure-game tone familiar to players of Maniac Mansion, as the trailer clearly indicates.

Where Is My Body? has already made more than three times its original goal on Kickstarter, and is set to release late this year. Dan Pusch has promised his backers stretch goals including physical copies of the game cartridge, free copies of his next game, and even the original sketches and maps of the game. At the time of this writing there are still 16 days left to back the project and get in on these generous goals, and to support this one-man development team's efforts to keep the Game Boy alive.

This close to the release of a brand new generation of video game consoles, it can be quite surprising to see that someone is still dedicated to supporting a console that first released all the way back in 1989. But it's quite inspiring to see someone dedicate this much time to memorializing and sustaining something they love, something which is an integral part of video game history. It's even more inspiring to see them share that love and that commitment with the world, and to see the public respond with overwhelming financial support. A project like this isn't going to appeal to everyone; Game Boy consoles aren't easy to come by, after all. But with the amount of care and enthusiasm radiating from a project like this, it's easy to wish Where Is My Body? the best.
