@Ooccoo_Jr The 90's was a fantastic decade for music, 2nd only to the 60's. From the year 2000 till now though, it's been shockingly poor. Even the great bands and artists of the 90's started their decline in 2000,Oasis with Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Radiohead with Kid A and Richard Ashcroft with his first solo album. All good albums and better than anything anyone else was putting out but they were nowhere near as good as what came before. The Strokes first album in 2001 was brilliant though.

Weird why people wouldn't believe it's him. He's really into his gaming, loves Nintendo and has been on Kinda Funny for E3 etc expressing his interest.

The next stretch goal is a Remix Soundtrack "Featuring a secret special guest". I wonder how many will suspect or see a connection...

It was the beginning of the new Radiohead and for me, they've been a band that's difficult to love ever since. I do love Pyramid Song off Amnesiac though. I was a huge fan of them in the 90's.

@OorWullie I can understand that. I like In Rainbows but didn’t really enjoy King of Limbs or even A Moon Shaped Pool, which everyone seems to love. Honestly, their best song since about 2001 is their Spectre theme that wasn’t even used in the movie, I watched an edited opening credits and it’s brilliant!

@OorWullie well I tend to agree in regards to mainstream music, but the noughties and 10's have brought really great and innovative niche music.
Genre-bending bands like The Mars Volta (and everything else Omar does), Rx Bandits, Closure In Moscow, The Sound Of Animals Fighting...I could go on.
And then there's a lot of jazz fusion, the whole math rock, "new" post-hardcore and swancore scene.
And that's only touching genres I do enjoy 😄

Yeah Thong Song and SisQó were HUGE. I remember him from the Dru Hill days. That's awesome that it's actually him, clearly it's a song you don't take too seriously. In my younger days I was very pleased to see such bodacious babes in his videos and on his appearances on MTV's Spring Break. It was so big even Jake virt Kaufman, composer of many WayForward games, did a chiptune for it. I'm glad someone as over the top as SisQó also appreciates Wonderful 101, come to think of it....it kind of makes sense that he would like it!

I love almost everything Omar related, even though I'm still missing most of the Ipecac album (so something like 20+ out of 60+, how does he manage all that?!).
It's absurd how many genres and styles he's touched upon, and he's made a lot of stuff I hadn't heard from anyone before him (like his more electronic albums, for example Octopus Kool Aid and Un Corazón De Nadie).

And for the post-hardcore part, I put "new" in quotation marks cause I didn't know how to express what I meant 😅
I basically meant how it changed from the 90's, where it was more melodic/emo/punk (Fugazi, The Get Up Kids, At The Drive-In) to the more scream-focused form it took from 2003/2005 onward (Saosin, Dance Gavin Dance, The Fall Of Troy; plus spoken word acts like La Dispute, mewithoutYou and Fear Before); and to the 10's, nowadays a lot of bands incorporate synths everywhere, use that metal-sounding low string notes instead of power chords and tend to be very overproduced.
I just wanted to point out how a single genre evolved in only 20 years, although I'll admit I don't listen to that many post-hardcore bands, so feel free to correct me 😄
It was the first thing that came to mind as I've been listening to a lot of DGD lately 😄

P.S.: I'd really like to know your favorite Omar albums and post-hardcore bands, it's not often I find someone with this kind of tastes to chat with 😄

Oh yeah! I see what you mean, now. Yeah, it pretty much transformed twice. I used to listen to a lot of the older bands like Envy, Sunny Day Real Estate and At the Drive In. I think Planes Mistaken for Stars were one of those bands in the middle area and maybe also Saetia if you've heard either of those. It kinda shows the earlier 'screamo' as people called it. I love Dance Gavin Dance! Jon Mess' lyrics are always entertaining xD
But I'm more impressed with Tilian. I hear Johnny Craig isn't the best of dudes but I didn't rate his vocals that highly back in the day, but I liked the Emarosa demos he did when he first joined the band, sort of stopped listening after the album that followed those. I also still play Saosin fairly regularly, I think Anthony is back with them now and they're touring again but I didn't catch it if it came here to UK, been so busy.
Do you mean the post-hardcore metalcore kind of thing like ermmm Asking Alexandria and that kind of thing? Never really dug that style, myself. I did however listen to metalcore more as a pure thing, mostly August Burns Red, managed to catch their tour where they played Constellations start to finish which was great!
I can't lie if you're not into synths and metalcore elements you probably won't like my music but I don't rely on the same repetition of low notes that a lot of metalcore and post 2010 djent and is famous for. I'll link you if you want, though! Can't lie, though I haven't really listened to Mars Volta that much, I remember liking some of it a lot when friends of friends played them but not remembering what the songs were called. I only heard the live thing due to my friend really liking Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Yeah it's unfortunate but the Mars Volta aren't really that famous...it's a shame too cause everyone knows John Frusciante and Flea, and they both have played in multiple TMV records (John on almost every one, he and Omar are great pals).
My personal favorite is Frances The Mute, their second LP, but it's pretty hard to get into since it's 90 minutes split across only 6 tracks lol
If you have 32 minutes to spare, though, by all means listen to "Cassandra Gemini", which has to be one of my favorite songs of all time. It's just crazy.

Back on the post-hardcore topic, I also tend to err more towards the early noughties style and don't really like the newer style (which sounds more like metalcore, as you said).
Some of the bands you mentioned I don't know so I'll check them out, as I've come back to this genre after some years and many bands I used to listen to make me cringe now lol (cough cough Silverstein cough cough). Out of all them, though, I'd advise La Dispute (especially the first LP, it's a masterpiece), Hands Like Houses (though the newer releases are quite generic) and maybe Secret & Whisper. Oh and some Tides Of Man songs are awesome (Tilian's first band).

Yeah Anthony's back in Saosin and their latest LP is one of the reasons I got back into post-hardcore to be honest; I started listening to that a lot a the beginning of last year and from there I started listening to DGD and never stopped lol
It was a great time to get into DGD, too! What with the instrumentals, the AC remaster and Blood Wolf all releasing in 2019! Oh, and there's another LP coming out this year!

Yeah the lyrics are all over the place, especially Jon's lol
They were one pf the reason I found it hard to get into them, since they're so "in your face" with their style it took some time to adjust and adapt to it, but once it clicked, it never left me! That is basically the same thing that happened with The Mars Volta, who are also very self-indulgent and "in your face".

Tilian's a beast. As a singer with a high-pitched voice myself I was in disbelief when I saw the first live video. It took a lot of time but now I can sing some of their tunes quite confidently 😄
I think the best proof of his ability is the Tree City Sessions live-in-studio album, it's crazy how he can sing Jonny's and Kurt's song with practically zero effort even in their highest points.
Jonny was always pretty hit-or-miss live for what I've seen, despite being basically always wasted on stage. As you said, he's not a great guy off stage, he's done some pretty scummy things until the band got fed up and literally left him on the other side of the U.S. when they were going back to California lol
Kurt, on the other hand, was pretty terrible live for what I've seen.

What is your favorite DGD release? I guess I'd say Happiness, natrowly followed by Mothership.
Maybe DBM2 in third, or Instant Gratification? So much good stuff lol.

Was supposed to be recording a couple weeks ago but my friend who mostly produces pop and electronic tunes really wanted to give some heavier stuff a go but made me buy an input! Haha Also usually use a combo amp so had to buy a distortion pedal.

I heard them before it, but I think Mars Volta accrued a decent following after they were on one of the Guitar Hero games.
Definitely got at least some recognition since then, but I suppose sadly rock and metal isn't quite as popular as the 70s and 80s.

I checked Cassandra Gemini, good stuff! I really dug the brass section and also the organ sounding solo. If I'm honest I didn't like the build ups going for too long but over all it was awesome. I also listened to the condensed version, though it was missing some really cool parts especially the outro with those catchy vocals.

Oh yeah! Check out As Cities Burn if you don't know em, they were a post-hardcore band in their first album, listen to the song "Of Want and Misery" and in their second album sound a little more like Mars Volta, except vocally, the song "84 Sheepdog" is a good example.

I've heard La Dispute, but mostly "With Such Small Hands" are there any others you'd suggest?

Haha I was actually gonna mention Hands Like Houses for the newer sound in my last comment. Also I listen to "Anchor" and "Warrior" by Secret and Whisper quite a lot!

Did you ever listen to Chiodos? They still get a lot of plays from me for how great 'The Bone Palace Ballet' was. Very mixed with a classical sort of sound. Though, songs like "All Nereid's Beware" from their first album are really fun to sing along to.

It's also funny you mention Silverstein as they played 'Discovering the Waterfront' in full here last weekend supported by Hawthorne Heights. Was gonna go for nostalgia but had just been to London for a band called Sleep Token! They are really great. Even if you don't check Chiodos I'd suggest "The Night Does Not Belong to God" by Sleep Token! Very emotionally hitting and amazing vocals. Bit on the deeper end, though.

Finally Tides of Man are also playing here this year! I only recently heard of them from the Bandsintown app (great app if youre a regular gig goer btw) suggesting me them, then I heard an old song and was like "hold on a second... I know that voice and face!". Haha

Yeah man, I feel like there are a fair number of metaphors in Jon's lyrics, because of the end lyrics in "Betrayed by the Game" he says "Because I can say that it was all just a metaphor". I'd go into detail but this comment is so long already haha

Honestly, I've mostly played Mothership a lot but Death of Strawberry has also been on a playlist of mine. I've been meaning to get the whole discography tbh! Really love the chords they use and the fast paced and well complimenting vocal melodies of Mothership tbh. Very well written.

About La Dispute, the album with "Such Small Hands" is exactly the one I was talking about, it's amazing from start to finish. I'd recommend Andria, Said The King To The River and Bury Your Flame, probably the coolest tracks on it.
S&W's Warrior is sooooo cool, I really like it! Their two albums are quite good if you ask me, check out "Lovers", "Vanishings" and "Youth Cats" 😉

4) I've heard of Chiodos but I never liked them nor their singer to be honest 😅 it's a shame too cause he's also collaborated with The Sounds Of Animals Fighting, one of the craziest act I've ever listened to, but I just can't seem to enjoy his voice. 5) wow, cool! I've listened to some post-Tilian stuff and even if I'm not that big on post-rock, I'd say it's pretty good.
It's crazy how much they changged their style after the departure of Tilian.

6) yeah you can generally get what he means, but oftentimes he's so out there it's hard to believe there's some deeper meaning beneath it 😅
Also, he stated he mainly focuses on the sounds of the words and certainly he does a great job at that, his lyrics usually sound really cool.

There's even a dude on te internet who paraphrases their albums and breaks down all the endless literary references, really deep stuff.

7) Agreed, Mothership as a whole is fantastic: it's got the poppy stuff, the funky stuff, the super heavy stuff...basically everything in theor repertoire is there!
I also really like the chords they use as they give them that kind of unique style they have, they're very creative.

Aaaaand finally I have some amateurish recordings of my band but we've changed the lineup a bit recently, so we're teaching our 5 songs to the new members and then we'll head to the studio and record more professionally.

3) Awesome, I think 'Said the King to the River' was my favourite, as much as I liked the other 2. Had a hard hitting chorus and such speedy rhymes and vocal rhythms
Not sure if you checked out Saetia, you may like them. The song "Venus and Bacchus" is a little like Such Small Hands, though the screams were very high which isn't to everyone's tastes but it's 19 years old now! Good piece of history along the post-hardcore journey.

4) I actually was gonna mention about Craig's vocals haha Yeah, they're off at times and a bit whiny but if you ever heard anything off "Illuminaudio" when they changed vocalists, it didn't really have the same feel for me, so I just got used to the less good parts of his vocals. I usually sing over him anyway haha

I listened to Sound of Animals some years ago but never got into them. I know they were a super group of some sorts. If I could trouble you once more for suggestions?
Also, if you like Saosin and Secret and Whisper, I want to throw one more band out there that I'm sure you'll like; 'The Sound of Us' by A Lot Like Birds. Some of their others songs are good technically as well, polyrythms and time signature changes and all that, but that one is catchy

5) Yeah, I only heard a couple of their later songs but without Tilian it didn't seem as good. Usually when I go instrumental I go full prog rock and metal like Animals as Leaders, Plini or Sithu Aye. Incredible artists! Especially Tosin fron AaL guitar techniques.

6) Ahh, ok! I didn't know that's how he wrote. Never really watched interviews with many bands!

I used to play an acoustic cover of A Sweater Poorly Knit by Mewithoutyou when I gigged and had their first 2 CD albums But I'll definitely be on the lookout for a lyric breakdown as I never really sung any other than Sweater.
I know Silent Planet has a lot of references to religious scripture but that's not the same thing ahaha

4) Oh fantastic, it's not just me then!
It's kinda weird coming from me, but often high pitched voices tend to grate me especially on first listen, I didn't even like Tilian at first and now I love how he sounds. Yeah I still get annoyed at some of his whinier vocals, but overall his timber and range are pretty unique. The way he sang in Tides Of Man I find more consistent in that regard.
Which leads me to

5) I know both Plini amd AAL and greatly appreciate their technique, but it's just not my style unfortunately. If you don't know them (but you probably do), check out Polyphia, they sound a bit like Plini.
On the topic of instrumental music, I love me some math rock, jazz fusion and experimental rock in general: for example, most of my favorite songs by Omar are from his instrumental albums.
Also, if you'd like to hear a jazz band making basically prog metal, check out W or Elephant In The Room by Jizue. They're one of my favorite bands ever and they have a very unique sounds that spans a whole lot of styles, moods and genres.
A metalhead friend of mine once heard Elephant and described them as "basically Dream Theatre if they were a Japanese jazz band". 😂

6) Oh, IASPK is awesome! The whole album is, to be honest.
If you listened to them back in the day, try checking out Pale Horses and the Untitled LP (not to be confused with the untitled EP lol), the last two they made: it'd probably surprise you to hear the direction they went. I personally thing these two are among their best if not the best...and it breaks my heart even more that they're disbanding this year and Untitled will remain as their last. Hope they come to Italy before disbanding.

@clvr Ahh yeah! Polyphia are awesome, I suppose they have a decent mix of sounds with the new stuff and probably would have been better to mention first. Haha The other ones I know are Chon, Intervals and Save Us From the Archon that are kinda like those others.
Elephant in the Room was crazy haha Good stuff! Reminded me of some parts of Plini and Sithu Aye as well. Saved it on my Youtube playlist. I haven't heard much Dream Theatre, but Jon Petrucci did something called Guitar Universe 2.0 which basically has him, Rusty Cooley, Tony MacAlpine, Tosin Abasi, Jason Richardson and a host of other good guitarists just jamming together on stage and I've given it a good amount of listens.

Sad to hear they're breaking up, though :/ They should do a European tour, they're big enough to do that for a final tour at least! The same thing happened with a band I used to play a lot called The Afterimage and they never got big enough to tour outside of the Canada/US but a band called The Parallel I've just discovered have a really similar sound so I'm trying to get them here somehow.

Great! I'll always keep writing and experimenting and so I will show you some stuff and see how we do if you feel you're ready in the future.

In general, I prefer my math rock soft and mellow, like toe or Tom's Story for example.
I also like other kinds of math, i.e. And So I Watch You From Afar, Mutiny On The Bounty, LITE, etc., but I tend to prefer when it's more on the emo side of the spectrum 😄
Though I've recently found out these dudes, Strawberry Girls (yeah they're dudes though lol), and having a blast!
