The Veronica Mars movie has officially become the most-supported project in fundraising website Kickstarter.com history after sailing past 88,000 backers.

Series creator Rob Thomas launched the plan to raise $2 million (£1.25 million) from online donations last month (Mar13), and fans raised half his goal in just five hours.

He quickly reached the target and then urged fans to keep offering up cash in return for rewards as he set his sights on breaking Kickstarter records.

And on Friday (12Apr13), he took to Twitter.com to reveal Veronica Mars now has more backers than any other project in Kickstarter history.

The previous record was held by videogame Double Fine Adventure with 87,142.

Thomas wrote, "We did it! We did it! This is amazing! You all are amazing! My phone is vibrating non-stop. This is so much fun!"

The fundraising ceased at 11pm (New York time) on Friday night. Over $5.5 million (£3.4 million) has been raised. The news comes a day after it was revealed actress Kristen Bell and her Veronica Mars co-stars are set to reunite for a special fan event at California's Comic-Con in July (13).
