Less than 48 hours into their new Kickstarter campaign, Critical Role is already making history. The actual-play D&D series launched its The Legend of Vox Machina animated special crowdfunding campaign on Monday, with a funding goal of $750,000. In less than an hour, it raised $1 million in pledges.

As of Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST, the campaign is at $4 million and climbing, with nearly 32,000 backers. If you open the Kickstarter page and watch the pledge numbers, they climb rapidly every few minutes. It’s honestly fascinating to watch.

Critical Role Vox Machine animated special Kickstarter

According to Fortune, this Kickstarter is already breaking records. The most-funded TV or movie project in the site’s history is the 2015 campaign for a new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which raised nearly $6 million. Right behind it is the 2013 campaign for the Veronica Mars movie, which raised $5.7 million.

It looks like The Legend of Vox Machina is going to blow both of those campaigns out of the water. Like any successful crowdfunding campaign, that’s thanks to the fans. Critical Role fans, affectionately deemed Critters, are especially arduous. Since Critical Role launched in 2015, the series has acquired a massive fanbase, all of whom seem to be arriving in droves to support this new venture for its creative team.

The Legend of Vox Machina is a scripted adaptation of the first season of Critical Role, set to premiere sometime in 2020. The campaign lasted for more than two years and amassed more than 360 hours of game play.

How far will the Critical Role Kickstarter climb? With 44 days left in the campaign, the possibilities seem truly endless. To catch up on past episodes of Critical Role, including the Vox Machina campaign, watch the series on YouTube or Twitch. 1. The animated special will not be a scripted adaptation of the first campaign – it will be an all new storyline set before the first campaign with the characters from it.

  2. See the first sentence from the “Writing Team” section from the kickstarter: “A brand new story was crafted by the cast of Critical Role and scripted by our good friend and talented TV writer, Jennifer Muro (Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Spider-Man, Justice League: Action)”
