YPSILANTI, Mich. (WWJ-- A long Michigan winter can be a big burden for dog owners.

Especially when the polar vortex puts a grip on the entire state, leaving owners and their dogs cooped up inside like last week.

That's why one Michigan company is trying to change the game. The Fur Ball Society, a pet-sitting, daycare and boarding business, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to open a 10,000 square-foot facility to give pet owners an alternative to the standard outdoor dog park.

"Owners need to be aware that spending too long outside in below freezing temperatures can be dangerous for dogs. Their ears, tail, and feet are especially susceptible to frostbite," Fur Ball Society CEO Ashley Grace said.

During the recent polar vortex that plunged Michigan into colder temperatures than the South Pole, dogs were experiencing more accidents and behavioral problems due to having no safe area for exercise, according to the Fur Ball Society.

The campaign, hoping to raise $50,000 to help fund the indoor park, has raised more than $4,000 so far.

Fur Ball Society is located at 13 E. Cross Street in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town. Founded in 2016, it provides full service pet care on-site and in-home. Fur Ball Society serves the southeastern Washtenaw County Community including Ann Arbor, Saline, and Ypsilanti and the Belleville area in Wayne County.
