Playing Around – What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Have you ever wanted to travel to space, maybe live on a spaceship? Have you considered what you might do if something went wrong? Do you enjoy sci-fi horror, like Alien and Event Horizon? Starship Infernum, the new game from Wicked Clever, might be the experience you’re looking for.

Inspired by an expansion to Purgatory House (the haunted house survival game), Starship Infernum is a pick-up and play, sci-fi survival horror RPG. It has quick and easy character creation, but pre-generated crew members are included so players can jump right in. And there are no convoluted rules to figure out – you just need to know how to play Blackjack! That also means no dice – grab two decks of standard playing cards and you’re good to go.

Unlike some RPGs, this one doesn’t ramble on endlessly – an adventure lasts 2-4 hours. There’s not even any preparation involved, as a deck of cards is used to determine everything from the ship layout to the obstacles encountered. And the 108 page book is filled with descriptions of those obstacles, the rooms on the ship and, of course, options for play. Plus, three master pen and ink artists have provided some fantastic illustrations.

The Kickstarter for Starship Infernum runs until July 4th and the page includes a video showing how the game works. For $10 you can nab a PDF version of the game, but the hardcover is only a $25 pledge. And higher pledge levels have some really cool exclusives, like custom joker cards, metal tokens, art prints and embroidered patches.
