In the month since taking over Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians from Playdek, the game's new developer has given backers and fans of strategy RPGs about as much information as Playdek ever managed. Today's Kickstarter update brings both good and bad news to backers and those who have kept an eye on the project. It's not often a project comes back from the dead after being canceled, but after how Unsung Story was originally handled it's not like anyone's expecting much out of Little Orbit. A number of add-ons and rewards for Kickstarter pledges are being altered or canceled entirely, but Little Orbit tempered the bad news with the revelation that the strategy RPG is going to find its way to consoles when it finally launches.
After the new developer's initial backer surveys came back, a number of items that Playdek initially promised weren't very cost efficient to produce based on the number of responses. For example, only 329 backers bought an add-on that promised three exclusive game stages that would never be released anywhere else, and Little Orbit just doesn't see the point in going through the extra work for something only 2% of backers would ever have access to. Some of the canned rewards were T-shirt pledges, a Kindle version of the game, a Windows tablet version of the game, and physical releases for Windows, GNU/Linux, and OSX.
That's all for the bad news, thankfully. While Little Orbit didn't have much to share with us last month, the team spent much of the month in pre-production to get their roadmap set up based on what Playdek initially promised Unsung Story fans. With the game already coming to PC and mobile devices, Little Orbit just doesn't think it's enough. The game will now be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch platforms whenever it finally releases, giving you the option to play on your couch as you reminisce about the great strategy games of old like Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre. Backers who already have the early bird reward tier can swap their preferred platform for one of the console releases if they want. Cross platform play is a question mark at the moment, and it's too soon for Little Orbit to share any details on whether it's a possibility.
The skeptics among us are still waiting for some sort of proof that Unsung Story is in fact being worked on and this isn't just another smokescreen, but the changes Little Orbit is making to the additional backer rewards are more than reasonable based on how many people would actually benefit from them trying to fulfill all of what Playdek initially offered. Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians still doesn't have a release date, but Rasfalia will be expanding to include PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch when it releases in addition to PC and mobile devices.
