Play the System Shock Remastered Demo Right Now on PC

System Shock Remastered is currently on Kickstarter, seeking $900,000 in total funds. However, you don't have to put down money on the remake until you've tried it: a demo for System Shock Remastered is available on Steam, GOG, and Humble right now.

Developer Night Dive's Kickstarter page describes the demo as "a proof of concept" and says that the performance, features, and visuals "are subject to change."

"We want to demonstrate our commitment and passion for System Shock by providing a fun and exciting experience to potential backers," the description reads. "This demo represents the look and feel that we want to achieve with the final version we'll deliver to you, our backers. ...We hope you enjoy your time aboard Citadel Station! SHODAN eagerly awaits your arrival..."

The System Shock Remastered demo takes up less than 500 MB of space and offers about 10 minutes of gameplay that delivers a fair amount of nostalgia. It's weird to see System Shock look this good--it definitely has promise. Additionally, the demo has controller support, though you'll need a mouse to make your way through its options.

Night Dive Studios is also working on System Shock 3. The developer confirmed the news in 2015 and released short snippets of gameplay footage earlier this year. It looks similar to what you can see in System Shock Remastered's demo. Deus Ex and System Shock producer Warren Spector joined the studio to lead development on System Shock 3.

System Shock isn't the first game the studio's remade. Night Dive remastered and released the original Turok late last year, and it has plans to remake the sequel as well. Both games are on their way to Xbox One.

System Shock's original developer was Looking Glass Studios, while the sequel's development was a collaboration with Irrational Games. After System Shock 2, Irrational went on to develop the series' spiritual successor, BioShock.
