Dreamfall sequel begins Kickstarter chapter

The lastest turn in The Longest Journey leads through Kickstarter, as Ragnar Tørnquist's new studio Red Thread Games has just launched a crowdfunding campaign for the upcoming Dreamfall Chapters.

Although originally announced back in 2007 as an episodic series continuation, the long-awaited Dreamfall Chapters now promises to "continue and conclude" the saga of "the Dreamer", Zoë Castillo. In returning players to familiar names and places while "introducing new sights and sounds, new faces, new game mechanics, new thrills and challenges", the sequel promises to take players "from a dystopian cyberpunk future, through the mysterious and dreamlike Storytime, to the magical landscapes of Arcadia."

Like its predecessor, Dreamfall Chapters will cast players in three playable roles, including Zoë, as you "explore a beautiful, rich, detailed, interactive and living world that mixes a cyberpunk vision of the future with magical fantasy, along with a broken and decaying dreamworld." These 3D worlds will be navigated through a "combination of point-and-click and direct control" interface, offering both the "deep and complex storyline" that we've come to expect from the series, along with "engaging puzzle gameplay designed for fans of adventure games."

Unlike the earlier Longest Journey games, which were both developed and financed by Funcom, Dreamfall Chapters is being independently funded – and now, publicly funded. Having already put much of their own money into the project, along with a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute, Red Thread Games is now seeking $850,000 by March 10th on Kickstarter in order to release the game by November 2014.

Pledge rewards that include a DRM-free digital download of Dreamfall Chapters upon completion begin at $20 (limited time only), while higher tiers include the likes of digital and printed artbooks, graphic novel, boxed Collector's Edition of the game, and even more for the big spenders.
