LiveCode logo If its Kickstarter campaign, launched on Tuesday, manages to raise £350,000 by 28 February, Runtime Revolution will open source LiveCode, their cross-platform development environment, under GPLv3. The campaign raised more than £32,000 in its first day on the crowdfunding site.

LiveCode is a well-established graphical IDE built around dragging and dropping of control elements and easy allocation of code to particular elements. LiveCode programs run under Linux, Mac OS, Windows, iOS and Android. A server version available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows delivers content directly from the web. The software is based on concepts introduced by Apple's 1987 development environment HyperCard, including its strongly natural-English-based programming language HyperTalk.

If the Kickstarter campaign reaches a successful conclusion, within a month both the source code and compiled versions of the IDE will be made available to download free of charge. A second phase, set to run until this autumn, would see Runtime Revolution completely revise and modularise the LiveCode source code to make it more amenable to community development and ensure effective further involvement of the community in developing the IDE. The scale of Kickstarter pledges ranges from £1 to £4,900; what contributors get for different contributions includes training materials and training sessions and licences to distribute non-open-source LiveCode programs.
