Exploding Kittens Kickstarter leaps over Reading Rainbow, breathing down the neck of Veronica Mars

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Now entering its final two weeks on Kickstarter, Exploding Kittens has achieved nearly 55,000 percent of its funding goal to the tune of $5.48 million. That puts the hobby game smack dab in between the Reading Rainbow reboot and The Veronica Mars Movie Project, making it the sixth-most funded project in Kickstarter history.

The project comes from a team including Elan Lee, famous in game design circles as the lead designer of The Beast, a promotional event for Steven Spielberg's movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Lee went on to co-found 42 Entertainment, the company responsible for Halo's I Love Bees ARG.

Also on the team is Matthew Inman, better known as The Oatmeal, who is contributing to the game design as well as his particular brand of humorous art.

Exploding Kittens became the most backed project in Kickstarter history just last week, cresting 100,000 backers with ease. It now sits with nearly 140,000. Kicktraq.com, a service that plots the funding trends for ongoing Kickstarters, shows it now has the potential to earn $9.43 million, sliding it just ahead of the Ouya game console at nearly $8.6 million.

With the unlock of 20 achievements all of the game boxes will be upgraded to a deluxe version with a hinged lid and a magnetic seal, as well as a secret unlock at 30 achievements.

The campaign will end on Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. CT.
