Frontiers release date pushed back to 'when it's done'

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 16 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Frontiers, the open-world exploration game from Lars Simkins and AAD Productions, will miss its originally scheduled release window and will now be available "when it's done," he announced this week.

Simkins launched a $50,000 Kickstarter campaign for Frontiers a year ago, and ended up raising more than $157,000. At the time, he planned to release the game by the end of the second quarter of 2014. According to the most recent version of his progress-tracking development calendar, Frontiers is less than 75 percent complete at this point.

"If you look at the backers calendar, you can see what's left; it's not a trivial amount of work," said Simkins in a video update. "I'm not going to set a new deadline, either. I'm just going to say — this is hard for me — I'm just going to say that it's going to be done when it's done."

Simkins added that he can't imagine the rest of development will take longer than the rest of the year.
