Kickstart some art: Cool crowd-funding ideas in need

Whitney Matheson
USA TODAY

Right now Reading Rainbow is racking up the crowd-funding dollars, but it's certainly not the only project worthy of our hard-earned cash. Below are a few more that look intriguing:

- The Hollywood Sci Fi Science Fiction Museum. I love this idea to create a non-profit educational museum devoted to science fiction. It has already made half its $82,000 goal, and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation) is on the board of directors.

The proposed film 'Viking of 6th Avenue' will profile New York musical icon Moondog.

- The Viking of 6th Avenue. Wow, after watching the Kickstarter video for this documentary, I'm ready to open my wallet. The proposed film will profile Moondog, the blind, homeless musician who became a New York icon (and whose life intersected with Andy Warhol, Philip Glass, Diana Arbus and other influential artists). Jeff Bridges has said he could play Moondog in a feature film, and man, I'd love to see that happen. (On top of that, the promotional T-shirts look pretty cool.)

- Miles Ahead: A Don Cheadle Film. Cheadle wants to bring his passion project about Miles Davis to the big screen and has already put a chunk of his own money into the film. But now he's asking for $325,000 to help recreate the time period and make it look as accurate as possible. If you have any interest in the flick — Ewan McGregor is now attached as well — cruise on over to his Indiegogo page.

- Rusted Root's new album. In a '90s kind of mood today? Thank these guys by helping them return to the studio. A $10 donation gets you a copy before the release date.

- The Drinkable Book. These small packages serve as instructions for how to create clean drinking water and filters that kill disease. The plan is to distribute them in Africa and India to help make clean water accessible to all.

- The Secret of Muhammad Ali. Back in the '70s photographer Al Satterwhite snapped some remarkable images of Ali. He wants to compile them into a book that will include commentary from Gay Talese, James Toback and other notables.

- Goonies Bicycle playing cards. Hurry, because there are only about three hours left in this campaign, which has successfully raised more than four times its $10,000 goal. The cards look awesome, and $15 gets you a deck.

- Help Arsenio buy the Clippers. Arsenio Hall started this Indiegogo campaign as a joke with a $1 billion goal. But so far he has raised more than $3,500, and all funds will be donated to the NAACP.
