oldcity3At the core of every great exploratory game is a purpose. The game’s purpose can be to tell a story or incite emotions. The game’s purpose can even be to make you question the game’s purpose, but there’s always a purpose, or else the game is meaningless and goes nowhere. The Old City, an explorathon being developed by PostMod Softworks, wears its purpose, on one level, like a t shirt saying, “Hey, look over here! This is what the game’s about!”. On another level, though, the game is left as an abstract, and that may just be a formula for a great game.

The Old City is about the story, and the story is about introspection and philosophy. Not “I just finished by first semester of college” philosophy, but actual, thematic philosophy based around the idea of epistemology, the nature of knowledge. You’ll be able to interact with your environment and key items, but there’s no death, there’s no enemy, and there’s no time limit. The Old City is about exploration, discovery, and piecing together the clues that’ve been right under your nose the whole time. Your hand will not be held, but everything you need will be given to you. You just need to figure out how to use it.

oldcity2The Old City is currently seeking $40,000 in funding on Kickstarter right now, so if you have $40,000 sitting around and really like the sound of this game, give PostMod Softworks a call. If you don’t have that much but still want to contribute, you have a few options. You can go over to Kickstarter and check out the reward tiers, or you can vote for The Old City on Steam Greenlight.
