Casual Game Crowdfunding: Pirates, Dinosaurs, and Murder Mystery

Pirates vs. Dinosaurs

We often see casual games being drowned out by RPGs, miniatures, and heavier games on crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. That's where we come in! Here is a list of some of the casual game concepts being crowdfunded this month.

Pirates vs. Dinosaurs (Jolly Roger Games) - A casual strategy game in which players are pirate captains searching for buried treasure on an island that is inhabited by dinosaurs, cannibals, and other hazards. Great artwork, an interesting theme, and accessible game play make this an appealing choice for casual game Kickstarters this month.

Et Tu? (James Wright) - As one who highly enjoys murder mystery parties (which are casual, scripted role-playing or improv games), this project caught my attention. Et Tu is a murder mystery party generator, which randomly produces a full set of quirky characters, a storyline, printable invitations, and everything else required for a night of murder mystery. It purports to include characters that have a back story and relationship to other characters, as well as a grammatically accurate storyline.

Questionable Fun (Robots and Red Tape) - We had the opportunity to test an early prototype of this game, which is a laugh-out-loud party game in which players answer open-ended questions in the most entertaining way possible, hoping to have their answer chosen by the "judge" (which rotates to a new player during each round). As the title implies, the game is intended for mature audiences, with suggestive topics contained on many (but certainly not all) of the cards.

Spaced Out (Guy Laing) - A fast-paced card game similar to Uno but with many enhancements, such as a fun theme, strategic scoring, out-of-turn attacks and defense.

Unless otherwise noted, we have not seen or played any of the above games. Our assessment of each game is based on the information given on the crowdfunding project page.
