Startup Finsix Aims To End The Laptop Power Brick Era

Menlo Park, Calif. — Start-up Finsix is bringing to market the Dart, billed as “the world’s smallest, lightest laptop power adapter,” after a successful fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.

The Dart delivers 65 watts of power from a 2.5-cubic-inch footprint that does not block a second outlet. It weighs in at just more than 2 ounces and includes a USB port to simultaneously power a laptop and charge another device.

The Dart’s reduced size is enabled by a patented technology called very high frequency (VHF) power conversion developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Finsix was founded by a team of MIT graduates that developed the technology.

VHF power conversion dramatically increases the rate of switching frequency, up to 1,000 times faster than conventional converters, while dramatically decreasing the amount of power wasted in the cycling process in the form of heat. Cycling faster allows the Dart to transfer smaller packets of energy in each cycle, which allows the converter to be much smaller and save energy.

The Dart works with any laptop that has a voltage of 18 volts to 21 volts and a power level of up to 65 watts. A custom 6-foot power cable is included to match the buyer’s laptop make and model. A compatibility list is available here.

The Dart will be available in blue, magenta, silver, gun metal and orange.

Finsix is currently waiting for regulatory approval and supply-chain finalization. The company is projecting a production start-up of four months for the Dart with product available in November.

Retail pricing is expected to be around $119. Macbook-compatible Darts will be priced higher due to the added cost of an off-the-shelf Apple adapter, the company said.
