planetscube2There’s a variety of Minecraftian games out there, and by that I mean games that use boxy voxel graphics.  Some are better than others, with the better games being the ones that do the most to move beyond their Minecraft roots.

Planets³ from Cubical Drift just launched on Kickstarter and is aiming to take the whole Minecraft thing to the next level.  Sure, it’s got some blocky graphics, but the developers are also promising there’ll be a full RPG in there, complete with character classes, detailed crafting, various fighting styles, and of course tons of exploration. Planets³ takes place on a suitably cubish planet that’s completely open for players to explore and improve before moving on to other planets in the system.  We’ve seen projects like this before on Kickstarter, and they haven’t necessarily fared well, but Planets³ is off to a pretty solid financial start so far.  Sure, the concept artwork looks worlds apart from the early gameplay footage shown so far, but if the ideas Cubical Drift have can be executed on we might have a great game on our hands.

The Planets³ Kickstarter has an aggressive $250,000 goal and runs until April 5th.
