Mighty No. 9 movie script expected soon, Inafune hopes for manga, anime, TV

The rights to the live-action movie adaptation of Mighty No. 9, the Kickstarter-backed spiritual successor to Mega Man, haven't been signed over to anyone yet, but it sounds like a deal could be coming soon.

Earlier this week, Contradiction Films writer and producer Tim Carter said that his production company was working on the adaptation and that he had been in talks with game developer Keiji Inafune about the project.

That's true, Inafune told Polygon today, but developer Comcept hasn't yet decided if they will work with Carter on the adaptation.

"It's not actually a 100 percent set deal yet," he said. "It is something we are looking forward to and considering the possibilities of. We are in talks with Contradiction about the possibility of making a live-action Mighty No. 9 movie."

After Carter contacted Inafune about the movie, the two got together to discuss the idea, Inafune said.

"We've directly talked with Contradiction about many possibilities and I've talked to them about the large picture, the Mighty No. 9 universe," he said.

Inafune said the two didn't really discuss story details though.

"I'd rather they see how much there is to Mighty No. 9 and then play on that and make the story even deeper by using many different parts of this big universe we've created," he said.

Inafune and the team at Comcept view Mighty No. 9 not just as a game, or even games, but as a massive universe, one that Inafune says is even bigger than the one created for Mega Man.

"I'd like there to be a comic book, manga, anime, movie, TV drama series."

"The story as a whole we're planning on making is a lot bigger than Mega Man was," he said. "There are a lot of things in the story, a lot of things we've already considered and already have for Mighty No. 9 that exists. With just one game we won't be able to go over all of these things.

"If the movie does get made, it would be something else in the Mighty No. 9 universe, a different part of the huge picture, huge story."

Inafune said that he expects that Contradiction will provide the game studio with a movie script "in the near future."

"We'll go over that and see how things go from there," he said.

The idea of a live-action take on Mighty No. 9 appeals to Inafune because of the successes of movies like Iron Man, Spider-Man, Superman and even Spy Kids.

"Before seeing these I might not have thought you could take a game like Mighty No. 9 and make it into a live-action feature," he said. "But when you think about it, there are all of these comic book hero movies and most of them turned out pretty well as live-action movies.

"If those turned out well, why not Mighty No. 9?"

Inafune said he isn't completely locked into the idea of Contradiction doing the movie yet. If, for instance, someone like Universal or Warner Bros. were interested, he said, he'd jump at the opportunity.

He'd also love to see the universe of the upcoming game explored by other mediums, not just games or a live-action movie.

"I'd like there to be a comic book, manga, anime, movie, TV drama series," he said. "Any possibility you can think of."
