Hero Forge is an upcoming service that will bring a new option to the tabletop: highly customizable, detailed, 3D printed miniatures.

Hero Forge lets you design custom tabletop minis, have them 3D printed, and delivered right to your doorstep. Its plugin-free WebGL character builder allows you to customize your favourite character by choosing its race, gender, facial expression and pose. You can also select and swap individual armor pieces, weapons, adventuring equipment, hairstyles, and faces. This new application of WebGL also means you'll be able to see your character in 3D as polygons on-screen before you see the physical model.

By using the Shapeways developer API, Hero Forge focuses its work on making the interface and 3D models, the manufacturing and shipping will be handled by Shapeways. Hero Forge plans to offer multiple scales at launch, including popular tabletop sizes 28mm-30mm and larger display versions.

Currently two main materials are offered at launch. One is an 'ultra-detail plastic' material which is slightly translucent (before priming), highly detailed, and is fantastic for painting. Another is 'strong plastic', a lower cost, albeit lower detail material which is very durable and flexible. It is opaque white, and has a rougher finish that makes it less suitable for painting.

Hero Forge team has launched its project on Kickstarter for crowdfunding for further development of its web UI and a wide range of 3D parts. You can take a look at a Kickstarter demo video below and some pictures of models and 3D prints miniatures.

It seems HerpDerp is hyperbolic, and is vague wording, it can be interpreted a few different ways. I do get annoyed with a lot of Kickstarters, but it's hard to deny that it's a good marketing tool.

"A service that lets you customize your perfect miniature using our web UI and have it 3D printed just for you!" right there, you need money to do that. now if that is already done, you could use publicity, which again, kickstarter can get you. stealing money? how? you have to come up with a number for the project, than add 10% for kickstarters fee. stealing money imply that they take it and never provide the models/service, and like you said, all they need is the printer and the ability to print. now, they are asking 20$ for a model, at the lowest price you get something. i fail to see how this is stealing... you make a character and get it printed, most people wont invest the time to craft their own models (from scratch) get a printer and set it up and learn to calibrate it and maintain it, and the tech just inst there for casual printers yet. but this comes along gives you somewhat easy to make your crap program, and at a kind of reasonable price (20$ for it with shipping included). from what i can tell this kickstarter is to get money while they are still developing the website, and to add to their art library, and they are giving figures are rewards. even if this was a pure publicity stunt of a kickstarter, i fail to see how its stealing.

And why do they need to launch on kickstarter? They buy a 3d printer, and off they go. I really hope this fails, I hate all these people trying to steal money off kickstarter.
