Exploring Real Heroes' Struggles in ASHES

April 23rd - via: newsarama.com
The lives and heroics of firefighters has been told in several mediums with numerous movies and TV programs dedicated to them. However in the world of comics, adventures showcasing these deeds are few and far between, especially if they're not tied to the superheroics of their surrounding world, i.e. Gotham Central. Writer Mario Candelaria and artist Karl Slominksi are here to give those brave men and women a voice with their Kickstarter project Ashes, which has just a few days left, and just hit their initial goal. (Read More)

“Ashes” OGN depicts the everyday heroism and sacrifice of NYC Firefighters

April 10th - via: whatchareading.com
So with mere days left in the kickstarter campaign I’m finally able to put words on the page and talk to you about the original graphic novel “Ashes”. Set in Brooklyn New York Ashes is the story of a young firefighter who suffers a traumatic and career ending injury on the job. I read the 18 page preview and the story really resonated with me. Having lost a young friend early in his firefighting career, James Bohan was lost in 1998 along with two other firefighters (see the memorial page here), and growing up with a Grandfather who suffered a similar injury to our main character this story pushed all the right buttons. But surprisingly it’s not the drama or the shared experiences that really drew me to want to read the whole book. (Read More)

Kickstart Your Week #1: Ashes

April 7th - via: comicattack.net
Kickstarter has been around for four years now, so if you’ve never heard of it here’s a quick explanation. People have dreams, people need money to make those dreams come true, so people create Kickstarters. These are pages where they explain their goals and ask the general public to help make their dreams come true by way of donations, usually coupled with awesome rewards. (Read More)

Kickstarter Interview: ASHES by Mario Candelaria @TheOtherMarioC & Karl Slominski @KidReverie

March 21st - via: amberunmasked.com
Ashley Neuhaus 21-MARCH-2013 I’ve been slacking on digging through the projects of Kickstarter and bringing them here to spotlight. The newest project I bring to you was delivered to my inbox by Amber so I’m still slacking. ASHES is a great story regardless of how I came to know about it. We’re all used to the spandex and capes stories when it comes to heroics but Mario Candelaria brings a different kind of hero to the world. He gives us Matt, an NYC firefighter who suffers from a career-ending injury. (Read More)

It’s been awhile since we’ve had the opportunity to talk about a graphic novel here on the ol’ Kickstarter feature. Too, long, I say. This week we’re taking a look at Ashes, a story about a firefighter that suffers a terrible, career-ending injury, and his struggle to cope with the fallout as his life changes all around him. Check out what other creatives are saying about the book: (Read More)
