A new Kickstarter project is giving those who pay into it the ability to send a personalized spacecraft to the moon. By contributing to the Pocket Spacecraft project, people ensure the creators will send a small personalized spacecraft to the moon.

The Pocket Spacecrafts are paper-thin discs, roughly the size of the average CD-ROM. Users can add pictures to their craft or even decide what the nature of the message that it transmits is.

Not only can people get the satisfaction of having a small, personalized part of themselves sent into space, they can watch every step of the craft's journey. From being built in the lab to getting loaded onto the Interplanetary CubeSat Mothership -The crafts will make their way to space by hitching a ride on a commercial rocket.

While some of the crafts will make their way back to Earth, the rest will continue their journeys to the moon. Spacecraft owners can track every step of their project's progress into space via a smartphone app. According to the Kickstarter page, backers can also use their phones to access the augmented reality feature and have it discern the exact location of the spacecraft in the sky, according to Mashable.

The spacecrafts are solar powered and will not just float leisurely toward the moon. They have an integrated optical and radio transceivers along with a variety of sensors that can track temperature and atmospheric changes. These will allow users to constantly receive data that is transmitted to them from their smartphones or computers.

After only five days on Kickstarter, more than 60 backers have pledged more than $11,000. According to Mashable users have more time to invest in an Earth-bound spacecraft for a pledge of $150 or a Lunar-lander for about $300. The devices are the perfect gift for the space enthusiast who wants to get real-time information from Earth's orbit without having to join the space program and become an astronaut.
