Kickstart some art: Cool projects that need cash

Whitney Matheson
USA TODAY
Artist Sucklord has proposed a series of mini-figures on Kickstarter.

It's time again for our ongoing series that explores some of the most interesting-sounding (and often overlooked) crowd-funded projects on the Web.

Do you know of a project that needs our help? Feel free to send any suggestions to popcandy@usatoday.com.

In no particular order:

1. A Matter of Time: An ALS Documentary — This film project focuses on musician Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers, who took time away from the band to care for her ailing mother. The trailer shows the devastating effects of ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease and chronicles Calder's mission to record a solo album while her mother was still alive to hear it. The Yellow Bird Project needs $50,000 to complete the film.

2. Thread Council — This Kickstarter aims to launch a clothing line that will reward and give recognition to the artists who design it. Artists on board have created T-shirt designs for some huge bands (Green Day, No Doubt, Prince), so the results should be cool.

3. His Heavy Heart— Acclaimed comics writer Alan Moore even has a project on Kickstarter now. This one aims to fund a short film, directed by Mitch Jenkins, that will mark the end of Moore's surreal "Jimmy's End" saga. (Though the project is in London, U.S. fans also can donate.)

4. The Stonewall Riots — This proposed comic book will chronicle the historic events that took place in New York in 1969 and are considered to be the start of the LGBT civil rights movement. The project, listed on Indiegogo, needs $9,000 to be completed, and just $8 gets you a copy of the book.

5. SUCKLE mini-figures — If you enjoyed the Sucklord on Bravo's short-lived reality show Work of Art (as I did), you may want to invest in these "kitschy little eyesores." The financial goal already has been reached, but I'm including it because you can still score a set of the mini-figs for $20.

6. Dig ComicsMiguel Cima is trying to make a documentary about the joy of reading comics. It will be a feature-length version of this short, which is worth a look:
