Even if all your wildest Kickstarter dreams come true, crowdfunding can turn into a nightmare.

Consider board game designer Ed Carter who lost his home after his successful Kickstarter campaign took a wrong turn. Back in 2011, Carter more than tripled his goal of raising $21,000 to make a deluxe version of Glory To Rome, a board game made by his company Cambridge Games Factory, Quartz originally reported. Then things fell apart. Carter ended up losing his home and his job largely because of a pledge to ship backers their copies of the game free.
