‘Veronica Mars’ Movie Adds Chris Lowell, Percy Daggs III

Chris Lowell and Percy Daggs III have signed on to the crowdfunded Veronica Mars movie, producers said.

Series creator Rob Thomas announced that the two veterans would be reprising their roles as Stosh “Piz” Pizarski and Wallace Fennel, respectively, over the weekend.

Lowell and Daggs join Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, and Jason Dohring in the upcoming film.

Production on the film is scheduled to begin in less than two weeks.

In March, Bell and Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise money for the film. A goal of $2 million in 30 days was set, and the campaign reached that goal in less than 12 hours.

A month later, the campaign had raised nearly triple the goal amount, with 91,585 backers pledging $5,702,153 for the film. The Veronica Mars campaign became the highest-funded Kickstarter project ever, and was the fastest to hit the $1 million and $2 million milestones.

Veronica Mars ran for three seasons from 2004 to 2007, first on UPN, and then on The CW. The series was set in the fictional town of Neptune, California, and starred Bell as the titular character. Veronica Mars starts out as a high school student, and later a college student, moonlighting as a private investigator under her detective father’s tutelage.

After the series was canceled in 2007, Thomas stated that he was interested in writing a feature film. The film ran into obstacles early on, with Thomas creating and writing two new series — Cupid and Party Down — at the time. By 2010, the film wasn’t fully dead yet, but producer Joel Silver was less optimistic that it would ever come to fruition. Now, thanks to the Kickstarter campaign, the Veronica Mars movie is slated for an early 2014 release date.

The Veronica Mars movie will also address the years-long gap between the end of the series and the film, and will pick up with a 10-year high school reunion.
