Third time lucky?

Precursor Games has announced crowd-funding for the spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness will be ‘temporarily’ closed, but that the project hasn’t been cancelled.

Funding for the game started on May 14, but with its June 19 deadline looming the Kickstarter campaign has only managed to raise $127,502 of its $1.35 million goal. Although Precursor did muddy the waters by initially starting with a separate funding campaign on their own website, which raised an additional $157,245.

That’s still over a quarter of a million dollars, but it’s been pretty obvious right from the start that the Kickstarter goal wasn’t going to be met – and if you don’t meet the target on Kickstarter you aren’t allowed to collect any money, no matter how close you get.

The two separate campaigns are one part of the problem, but the fact that the funding is only for the first episode of a series of Wii U and PC-only downloads is another.

It always seemed strangely limiting but Precursor CEO Paul Caporicci is implying that the developer has arranged some new deal with a publisher, presumably either Nintendo or a third party that will bring the game to Xbox and/or PlayStation formats.

‘Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for,’ claims Caporicci. ‘Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned.’

‘As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6.

‘This doesn’t mean we are going away – far from it. We’ll be re-launching the Kickstarter in just a few short weeks with a reveal of these exciting new developments.’

As per normal Kickstarter rules everyone that has pledged to help the funding will now receive a full refund, but the forums for Shadow Of The Eternals will remain open and Precursor are still encouraging fans to get involved with ideas for the new game.

Given it’s E3 next week – which developers often use as a means to meet publishers and sign new publishing deals – we could see an announcement there, or perhaps just a few weeks after.
