‘The Eyeslicer’ Season 1 Is Now Streaming Online: Amy Seimetz, David Lowery, and More Featured In Punk Rock Variety Series
“The Eyeslicer” is ready to blow your mind again. Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell’s crazy variety series made waves when it premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival, making a name for itself as a unique, boundary-pushing amalgamation of 55 short films across 10 episodes. Now, in conjunction with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for Season 2, the first season has been made available for streaming on the show’s official site for the next month.
The first season, which was also funded through a Kickstarter campaign, featured work from a number of emerging film auteurs at various stages of their careers, including David Lowery (“A Ghost Story”), Ari Aster (“Hereditary”), and Amy Seimetz (“The Girlfriend Experience”). Each episode was a “mixtape-style” compilation of short films from these directors, and each was certifiably mind-blowing. Topics ranged from dreams to the fall of Blockbuster, but if that wasn’t enough for you, Season 2 has been described by the new Kickstarter campaign as “darker” and “weirder.”
Schoenbrun and McDonnell also have some big-time plans for Season 2. These include a feature-length Halloween special, a new zine that will double as a distribution outlet for experimental feature films, and the Radical Film Fund, a micro-granting program for auteur-driven work. The season will also feature a stand-alone episode guest-created by a collective of female filmmakers (led by Kelly Sears, Jennifer Reeder, and Lauren Wolkstein), which will address systemic gender discrimination and sexual assault in the film industry.
On the Kickstarter campaign page, the creators also had this to say about the show: “We believe there’s a radical new filmmaking movement bubbling up in America right now just out of sight of the corporate algorithms that are constantly surveilling our entire lives and feeding us mediocre ‘content.’ It’s being led by a diverse community of DIY artists making work that’s personal, provocative, and proudly non-conformist. ‘The Eyeslicer’ is a love letter to this movement, and a home-base for anyone looking to binge-watch a TV show that instead of making your eyes glaze over, will rip straight through your corneas like an X-Acto blade through hot damp tissue paper.”
